How to break the habit of being being yourself
The hardest habit to break is the habit of being yourself.
But here’s the truth: you’re not trapped by your past or your patterns. You can change. You can become the person you want to be.
It’s not about suddenly becoming someone completely different overnight. It’s about understanding the habits, beliefs, and emotions that keep you stuck and then intentionally shifting them. This process takes awareness, patience, and practice. It’s about breaking old cycles and building new ways of thinking and being that support your growth.
So in this edition of my blog, I’ll be sharing simple but powerful steps to help you break free from old habits and start becoming the person you truly want to be.
1.Become aware of your current habits
The first step to breaking the habit of being yourself is to become aware of your habits. You can’t change what you don’t notice. So start paying attention to the things you do automatically - the thoughts you have, the reactions you make, and the routines you follow.
Most of us go through life on autopilot, acting without really thinking about why we do what we do. Those automatic habits shape who we are, often without us even realizing it.
The key to change is catching yourself in the act - noticing your patterns, your triggers, and how they influence your emotions and actions.
Awareness gives you the power to interrupt those habits and choose a different path.
2. Challenge your beliefs
Often, your beliefs are what shape your reality so once you start becoming aware of your habits, you’ll begin to notice the beliefs that are driving them.
You might not even realize they’re there. Things like “I’m not good at this,” “Nothing ever works out for me,” or “This is just how I am.” These beliefs often go unnoticed but they influence everything: how you show up, what you expect from yourself, and what you think you’re capable of.
But here’s the thing, all those beliefs aren’t even true. They’re narratives.
Narratives shaped by your past, your environment, your experiences. Not your potential.
So, if you want to grow, you have to learn to question them. Ask questions like:
Where did this belief come from?
Do I know it’s true?
Is this belief helping me or holding me back?
You don’t have to have all the answers now but by challenging your current beliefs, you are giving yourself permission to grow.
3. Visualize the new version of yourself
Once you’ve started becoming aware of your habits and challenging the beliefs behind them, it’s time to start imagining something different. Who do you want to become? What does the best version of you actually look like?
Be as bold and creative as you want when you visualize your future self. Don’t hold back or downplay your desires. The clearer your vision, the more power it holds because knowing what you want is already 50% of the journey. You can’t become someone you can’t even picture.
Picture the version of you who has already leveled up - the one who shows up with confidence, makes aligned choices, and doesn’t flinch at setbacks. That version of you already exists in your mind. And the moment you decide to focus on them, you begin building the mental blueprint to match it in reality.
So stop playing small in your own head.
4. Take action NOW!
All the awareness, belief-challenging, and visualization won’t matter if you don’t act. Change requires movement and even the small steps forward count. Don’t wait for motivation or the perfect moment because as Mel Robbins once said, “Motivation is garbage.” The best time to start is right now.
Taking action builds momentum. Momentum helps reshape your habits and transforms your life. So quit overthinking, stop waiting for the “right time,” and make one move toward the person you want to become starting right now.
Breaking the habit of being yourself isn’t easy, but it’s possible. It starts with awareness, challenging the beliefs that hold you back, visualizing who you want to be, and then taking real action. Change takes time and patience, so don’t be discouraged if you make a mistake or two, but know that every step forward brings you closer to the person you’re meant to become. So don’t settle for old patterns - choose growth, believe in your potential, and start today.
